Emergency Alert Scheme Tested

From The Herald Sun, By Mark Dunn, July 14, 2006

AUSTRALIANS could receive SMS or email alerts warning of a major terrorist attack or natural disaster.

There have already been trials sending emergency messages to mobile phones and home and work computers to alert people about dangers theoretically ranging from nuclear or biological attack to bush fires.

Under a Council of Australian Governments agreement, the states are working on proposals to put before the federal coordinators, Emergency Management Australia.

It will decide on a national approach to upgrading alert systems for emergency services and the public.

EMA spokesman Alastair Wilson said the technology had to be flexible enough to deliver warnings to local communities in confined emergencies and to disasters involving the entire nation.

Television, radio and newspapers have also met federal authorities to discuss the most efficient ways of sending emergency information.

Murdoch University in Western Australia has tested a multi-channel public emergency warning system, which included SMS, email, voice, fax, media and web page alerts for cyclones and bush fires.

The Royal Australian Navy is already using a mobile communication system to contact personnel in times of emergency, recalling sailors to base for incidents such as the Boxing Day tsunami.

NiCad Battery Care

Here are a few do's and don't if you want to extend the life of not only your radio batteries but other rechargeable batteries as well.

  • Charge your new battery overnight (14-16 hours) before using it. This is referred to as “initializing” and will allow you to obtain maximum battery capacity.
  • When using a rapid charger, leave the battery in the charger for an additional 1-2 hours after the green light appears. (Battery is only 90% charged when green light appears)
  • Do not leave your radio and battery in the charger when charging is not needed, Continuous charging will shorten the battery life.
  • Charge a battery only when it has been fully discharged (flat). If you use your battery for 4 hours a day and place it in the charger at the end of the 4 hours, doing this day in and day out, the battery builds up a memory of 4 hours. One day when you want to use your battery for 6 hours it will go flat around the 4-hour mark due to this memory effect
  • Do not return a fully charged battery to the charger for an “ Extra Boost”. This action will significantly reduce battery life.
  • Allow a battery to return to room temperature before charging

RSVP 06 and W2W's new website

We had a fantastic time at last months RSVP at Wharf 8, it was great to see some old faces not seen for a while, and meet new people who we may be able to help in the future. Either way thanks for coming to visit us.

On another note, we have revamped our website. It was due for an overhaul and it’s now much easier to find what you are looking for. If you can’t find what you want or would like us to include some additional material that would help you, please let us know. We appreciate all of your feedback.

Have a look at our new website

New Products - New Range of intelligent battery chargers

The ‘memory effect’ (loss of capacity) is due to dendrite growth on the electrodes in the Nickel based battery cells. Dendrites are stalagmite and stalactite like formations that mainly occur on the Nickel electrodes. The dendrite growth reduces the amount of surface area available for energy transfer and if left unchecked may even cause cell failure.

The ACT system slows down the growth of dendrites to a point where they do not have any effect on battery performance. If dendrites already exist in a battery, the ACT charging process will remove the majority of dendrites within 12 charge cycles and slow their growth from that point on. Also oxidisation of the electrodes is virtually eliminated and any oxidisation that has occurred can be reversed thus improving the operational effectiveness and overall product life cycle.

The ACT charger products redefine how users charge and manage batteries and ultimately bring cost savings to bear. All ACT chargers offer the following benefits: -

  • Batteries are conditioned as they are charged – This extends the battery life by a minimum of 2 times in an operational environment (lab tests have shown up to 5 times)
  • No user discipline required – batteries can be placed on and removed from the charger at any time without detriment to the battery
Batteries can be topped up and removed before a full cycle is complete without and detriment to the battery
  • Batteries can be recovered using these chargers – the unique system breaks down chemical build ups that shorten battery life
  • The chargers use a common base unit with radio and battery specific adaptors, this means that customers upgrading their fleet can still use the ACT charger by simply replacing the adaptors.
  • Able to charge different brands of radio battery at the same time (using the brand specific adaptors)
